MIHARI is the only network of locally managed marine areas (LMMA) in Madagascar, having a national influence while facilitating the sharing of experiences and capacity building at the local level.

Marine and coastal resources are managed sustainably for the well-being of LMMA communities and their future generations.

Support the networking of LMMA communities for the long-term management of marine areas by strengthening their capacities, improving their well-being, advocating for their interests, and effectively sharing their experiences.

  • Solidarity : Our goals are not easy to achieve. Solidarity within communities and between stakeholders gives us the strength, wisdom and reflection needed to manage marine and coastal resources properly.
  • Sharing: Transparency, mutual assistance, exchange of ideas, and experiences enable us to continue innovating and being committed to the cause of LMMA in Madagascar.
  • Leadership : Characteristics of good leadership are present in all aspects of the network’s work. The network’s leadership unites Madagascar’s LMMA around a common vision and enables members to make collaborative decisions based on well-communicated information.
  • Collaboration : We always seek complementarity and synergy among MIHARI members to implement actions to successfully carry out the work required for LMMA development.

In Antrema, women are working to make their community a model of sustainable ecotourism. Supported by the UNDP’s Ocean Innovation Challenge programme, they are working to preserve the region’s natural and cultural riches, while strengthening their economic autonomy. Thanks to training in guiding, hospitality and tourism management, these women are becoming ambassadors for a unique heritage and are actively involved in promoting balanced development that serves their community and the surrounding biodiversity.
